Since last summer I’ve been making inks: pokeberry ink, black walnut ink and iron gall ink. The latest is pomegranate ink— technically another type of iron gall ink. Basic iron gall inks consist of tannic and/or gallic acid, iron sulfate, gum Arabic and water. The tannic acid is obtained from plants, most particularly oak galls. But rather than use oak galls this time to obtain tannic acid, I used pomegranate peels. I let them ferment and mold over for 2-3 months, which converted the tannic acid into gallic acid.
